St. Bridget’s Senior Residence
In the Van Vorst Historic District in downtown Jersey City, St. Bridget’s Senior Residence is a shining example of adaptive reuse, transforming the former historic rectory, convent, and school of St. Bridget’s Church into a successful senior living campus. Completed in 2014, this $10.6 million project offers 46 units of affordable housing for adults aged 55 and older, with special features for individuals with disabilities and frail seniors aged 62 and older. The development preserves the architectural character of the historic buildings, making them historically significant yet providing modern, comfortable housing.
Residents of St. Bridget’s Senior Residence enjoy a range of amenities that encourage community and wellness, including a community room, in-building laundry, and an outdoor garden patio with tenant gardens. The availability of social service program space ensures residents have access to supportive services they can utilize. The project was financed through a combination of Low-Income Housing Tax Credits, Federal Historic Tax Credits, and the City of Jersey City funding, reflecting a successful public-private collaboration in addressing the housing need of seniors.
