Calyx Living of Wakefield Reviews

Ryan Foxworth
As the Area Director of Dining Services for Calyx, I have been fortunate to be a part of Calyx Living of Wakefield’s development since before the doors opened early last year. I am so proud to be a part of the team and want to share some recent feedback that we received from a resident.“My mom has been at Calyx for almost a month in the memory care division. I have been very happy with how she has been treated so far; my mom has dementia and isn’t easy to handle. They keep her busy with activities! Her room is always clean, the staff is attentive and good with distracting and diverting her attention when she gets upset or has her “moments”. They have also been supportive of ME during this difficult transition (from my mom living with me the past 5 years and us being very close). Patricia (marketing) has been a Godsend, she is a wonderful and caring person and management is lucky to have her! I love Lori (memory care); she goes above and beyond to comfort and reassure my mom when she is agitated. Also Tiffany and Victoria (memory care) and Joy (housekeeping) always put a smile on my face. I haven’t had a problem with anyone and really, they all deserve a mention. Most memory care facilities can be dismal and depressing, and I think Calyx does everything they can to avoid that! I also love the art classes and exercise! The instructors are positive and patient with the residents. Food is so good, too! Hope this review helps someone who is considering placing a loved one. It took me a long time to do it, but it needed to happen and I believe it’s the right fit.

With more than 20 years in senior living as both a Regional Clinical Director, and now as a Clinical Consultant, I've had the opportunity to work with many communities and care teams throughout my career. That experience has given me a deep appreciation for what exceptional resident care truly looks like. I'm proud to say Calyx Living of Wakefield consistently reflects those high standards. What stands out most is the commitment of both the community team and senior leadership to ensure every resident receives thoughtful, individualized care. There is a genuine partnership between caregivers, nurses, department leaders, and regional support, to work together to meet resident needs while providing quality care. The relationships built between the residents and the compassionate, dedicated care team are meaningful and long lasting. You can see the sense of pride the staff have in their work each day as they seek to enrich the lives of the people they serve.I can confidently say that Calyx Living is a company that truly lives its mission. I'm honored to support a team that is so deeply committed to delivering exceptional care while creating a community where residents thrive.

I've worked with Calyx Living of Wakefield for years and have seen the quality of care up close. The community is modern, clean, and built with real thought. The outdoor spaces stand out: room for gardening, quiet reading, and socializing. The food is genuinely delicious, made with fresh ingredients (some from their own gardens), and the kitchen easily tailors meals to a resident's needs. The activities are engaging. I've seen instructors and team members bring out the personality of residents who'd been dimmed by the loneliness of aging. What stands out most about Calyx is the people. Staff members are well-trained and show real compassion toward residents, day in and day out. In my experience, they embrace a culture that sets Calyx apart from other assisted living options. My mother-in-law needed assisted care before she passed. I truly wish a place like Calyx Living of Wakefield existed near her. She would have received excellent care, and the quality of the community would have given my father-in-law real peace of mind. When my family faces this choice again, Calyx Living of Wakefield is exactly the kind of place I want for them: the people, the amenities, the food, the activities, the care, all of it.

Since Calyx Living of Wakefield opened its doors last year, my deep satisfaction and pride as Licensed Administrator and Regional Director with 20 years of experience has continued to grow.Over the past year, we’ve been fortunate to develop a large, well-staffed team of caregivers who share our mission and dedication to our residents. It has been so wonderful to see the smiles on so many faces of our staff, from our resident care team to our dining and activities teams, as they form meaningful connections with our residents. Behind every resident is an extensive and dedicated team of compassionate professionals focused on comfort, safety, and well-being.The attention to detail and hands on support provided by our leadership team is evident throughout the community, including in the beautiful presentation, the deficiency-free survey record, and the quality of care provided by the dedicated staff. What gives me the most satisfaction is hearing from our residents and family members as they share how happy they are to call Calyx home. I often have the pleasure of hearing how kind a caregiver is, how much a family member appreciates their loved one being part of the Calyx family, or visiting with a team member as they share how happy they are at Calyx.

This is one review I am very happy to leave as this is one of those experiences that truly stands out—especially in a field as important as senior care. Calyx Living of Wakefield is a true gem in this locale. And for good reasons. What makes this place special isn’t just leadership or vision—it’s the incredible dedication of the staff who show up every day and bring that vision to life for the residents. Since opening last year, there’s been a clear sense of professionalism paired with genuine compassion. The team consistently treats residents with dignity and respect, and it’s evident that their well-being isn’t just a priority—it’s the foundation of everything they do. What impresses me most is how much of the heart of this place comes from the people on the floor—the caregivers, support staff, and team members who go above and beyond in ways big and small. Their hard work, consistency, and genuine care are what truly shape the daily experience of the residents. The care feels attentive and thoughtful. Communication is clear, families are kept informed, and there’s a reassuring sense that nothing is overlooked. The environment is warm, supportive, and centered around creating comfort and quality of life for every resident. It’s rare to find a place that balances clinical excellence with such a human touch. That speaks volumes about the people behind it! If you’re looking for a community that truly cares and goes the extra mile, this is one I would confidently recommend.

I would never recommend this facility, which is a shame. It could be the best in the area. It is more expensive than other options, but the care level was extremely disappointng. The facilities are beautiful, but it is incredibly understaffed. On weekends, it is a virtual ghost town. I would find my mother stuck in bed for hours after pushing and pushing her call button. Overall a very traumatic experience for her and our family. To be fair, many of the staff were very kind and giving, but the good ones lasted about 30 - 60 days. The pay is terrible at $13.50 and hour. They can get $17 at Target. We paid top dollar for a high level of care and got minimal care.

My friends have a family member at Calyx Living in Wakefield, and after just two weeks, their experience has been deeply concerning. The community opened with high promises but has quickly revealed serious issues in leadership, staffing, and security. Most alarming, there have already been two elopements from the supposedly “secure” memory care unit. That alone should raise serious concerns (NC State Health Department, take note). Staffing shortages are constant, with corporate leadership stepping in to cover shifts because regular staff are leaving at an alarming rate. The turnover is staggering, and with employees underpaid and overworked, many don’t stay long enough to learn their roles properly. Despite the high cost, families are left frustrated and stressed as they watch their loved ones struggle due to poor care and disorganization. To make matters worse, both assisted living and memory care appear to be staffed at the bare minimum state-required ratios, offering little reassurance to residents and their families. If you’re considering Calyx Living in Wakefield, I strongly urge you to speak with current families and employees before making a decision. The reality behind the marketing promises is deeply troubling.

Title: Executive Director Experience – Incredible Potential, But Leadership Prevents Real Change I served as an Executive Director at Calyx Senior Living, and this review is written after a great deal of reflection. I did not come to this decision lightly. Calyx has beautiful communities and tremendous potential. Unfortunately, the greatest barrier to success is the leadership culture at the top. As an Executive Director, I quickly realized that the ability to create meaningful change is extremely limited. Decisions are centralized, feedback is not welcomed, and initiatives that would improve staff morale, resident satisfaction, and operational stability are often shut down before they have a chance to succeed. The most concerning issue is the consistent pattern of strong department heads and senior leaders leaving the organization. This is not coincidence—it is culture. Talented, passionate professionals come in wanting to make a difference, only to discover that they are not empowered to lead, innovate, or feel supported. Over time, the environment becomes discouraging and unsustainable. Communication from upper leadership frequently feels dismissive and condescending, and collaboration is often replaced by top-down directives. This creates a workplace where employees feel undervalued and unappreciated, which inevitably impacts the quality of the environment for both residents and families. I personally made significant sacrifices for the company, including canceling personal plans and vacations at leadership’s request, often at my own financial loss. Despite this level of commitment, appreciation and recognition were notably absent. Over time, the imbalance between expectations and support becomes very clear. Families and staff both want stability, transparency, and leadership that listens. Unfortunately, the disconnect between corporate leadership and community-level reality makes it extremely difficult to provide the level of care and culture that exist!

NC DHSR Star Rating (0–4 stars). Issued by North Carolina's Division of Health Service Regulation based on annual facility inspections. Stars reflect overall compliance with state health and safety rules - 4 stars requires scores of 100+ on two consecutive annual inspections. Ratings can change between inspections if new violations or licensure actions occur.
DHSR Quality Score (/200). Each annual inspection starts at a base of 100 points. Facilities earn demerit points for violations and citations, and merit points for correcting issues, maintaining resident/family councils, sprinkler systems, and other quality programs. The "/200" display reflects the two most recent annual inspections combined - giving a longer-term view of compliance trends rather than a single snapshot.
Count of regulatory inspections in the reporting window. Higher volume can reflect more oversight visits, complaint-driven surveys, or routine licensure cycles.
Share of inspections that resulted in deficiencies, expressed as a percentage of total inspections in the window.
