Julie Trowbridge
I’ve lived at South Jordan View Retirement Community for a little over a year. During this time, 3 of the 8 permanent staff have been replaced: executive chef, senior living consultant, and dining room supervisor. There is constant turnover in the kitchen staff and the housekeeping staff. There have been issues with the main kitchen appliances, electrical wiring, fire alarm detectors, water softener, burst pipes, and the awning over the front entrance collapsed to mention a few. This building is 3-4 years old. The main issue I have is concerns regarding the quality and safety of the food served here. Because of these concerns, I prepare the majority of my meals in my apartment. The executive chef’s poor performance is reflected in the low quality of foods purchased, poor food preparation, food safety violations, and the lack of appropriate supervision/training of kitchen staff. The job posting for an executive chef at this community offers a $75,000 to $78,000 salary (the average national salary is $90,000); previous leadership experience in culinary preparation and cooking is preferred (not required); required qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, basic computer skills, manager food safety certification, and 18 years of age or older. Numerous food complaints from residents include: meats are undercooked or overcooked; vegetables are overcooked; food in the serving line is cold (should be hot); food is too salty; food lacks flavor; low grades of meat; low quality of fruits; staff doesn’t check if foods are missing or need to be replenished on the salad bar; missing serving utensils; tables/chairs are dirty. I observed several chefs putting raw hamburger patties on the grill and then wearing the same gloves to handle clean dishes and serve prepared food. Not changing gloves after handling raw meat is a serious food safety violation which can lead to foodborne illnesses caused by E. coli and Salmonella. What do you like most about living here? Answer: The apartment is confortable. Are there enough caregivers to handle the residents' needs, especially during emergencies? Answer: Yes Are the common areas pleasant and comfortable for socializing or relaxing? Answer: Yes How would you rate the quality and variety of the meals? (1-5) Answer: 1 Are special diets handled well? Answer: No Is the dining schedule flexible enough to meet your preferences? Answer: No How do you feel about the level of social interaction available with other residents? Answer: Adequate. How was the units offered in this community? Answer: Independent living. Do you feel safe living in this community? Answer: Yes How well do you think the community handles emergencies or unexpected events? Answer: Ok. Are there any hidden fees or unexpected charges? Answer: No. Would you recommend this community to others looking for senior living options? Answer: No. Is there anything you wish you knew before moving in? Answer: Poor quality of the food served.
