Thorek Retirement Home

Thorek Retirement Home has been part of Ravenswood, on Chicago’s north side, for more than 125 years. It’s a faith-based, non-profit community at 4950 N Ashland Ave that welcomes residents of any faith, and it’s regulated by the Illinois Department of Public Health’s Office of Health Care Regulation. This is senior living built specifically for memory care.

The community is secured, with enhanced supervision and daily routines designed to reduce stress for people living with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. Staff receive specific dementia care training, and the caregiver-to-resident ratio runs higher here than it would at a facility without that specialization, because this kind of care takes more hands, more attention, more consistency.

The physical setup is a mid-rise building with studio and one-bedroom apartments running 300 to 700 square feet. Outside those walls, the neighborhood does a lot of the work: a Walk Score of 89 means most errands, groceries, a pharmacy run, a walk to a restaurant, can happen on foot, and Ascension Saint Joseph is just 3.12 miles away if hospital care is ever needed.

Day-to-day life includes social events, fitness and recreation programming, and organized community activities, backed by on-site security, housekeeping, and meal service. None of that changes what this place actually is: a dementia-specific, secured community in a walkable pocket of Chicago, built around the idea that memory care residents need structure first and everything else second.
