Overview of O’rourke Dsu

The O’Rourke Dementia Stabilization Unit (DSU), located at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Monroe, Wisconsin, provides short term care for adults experiencing significant behavioral symptoms of dementia. These may include agitation, aggression, anxiety, hallucinations, or wandering that have become difficult to manage in their current setting.

During a stay of 28 days, the DSU team gets to know each person, identifies factors that may contribute to distress, and develops individualized approaches to care. Staff work alongside medical and psychiatric providers to assess needs, adjust care approaches, and create a behavior support plan. Families and caregivers are included in planning so they understand which approaches have helped.

The goal is a safer, more supported transition after stabilization. For some residents, that means returning home; for others, it means moving to a care setting better equipped to meet their needs. Established through a consortium of Grant, Green, Iowa, and Lafayette counties, the DSU now supports referrals from 25 counties.
