River Towers

River Towers sits right on the Detroit River in the city’s Gold Coast neighborhood, and it’s built for people 55 and up. It’s a high-rise, so a lot of the units come with river views or a look out over the skyline. You can get a one-bedroom at 545 square feet or a two-bedroom at 705 square feet.

This is independent living, not a place with nurses on staff or medical care built in. That’s kind of the point, though. Residents run their own households, and if they need outside care or support, they bring it in themselves. Every apartment comes stocked with air conditioning, a garbage disposal, a range, a fridge, and closets big enough to actually use. One detail worth knowing: rent includes all the utilities, heat, gas, water, electric, trash, all of it.

Getting around the neighborhood is doable on foot for some errands, since the Walk Score lands at 66, moderately walkable. The nearest hospital, Riverview Jefferson Health, is barely a tenth of a mile out.

Pets can come along too, with some restrictions depending on the animal. Between the river setting, the walkable pocket of the city, and a building stocked with the everyday comforts people actually use, River Towers is a straightforward option for someone who wants independence with a city backdrop rather than a campus tucked away from everything.
