My mother was sent to Manatee Springs after multiple hospitalizations and this facility quite literally killed her at the age of 58. If I could've pressed criminal charges, I would have, but my mom didn't live long enough to report it. After she died, we saw a lawyer, who ultimately told me that because Manatee Springs had NO record of anything that occurred during the last 6 hours of her stay there, nothing could be done legally. They omitted evidence, and because of that, they got away with it. I contacted the last staff member to write their name on any reports and she told me she didn't know what happened because her shift ended 5 or 6 hours before her hospital transfer. Before the event that killed her, she told me a LOT about what was going on. She said she was one of the few coherent and mentally clear patients on the Rehab floor and it was horrifying. She was literally afraid to tell me everything that happened there because she was afraid I'd report it and she would be treated badly in retaliation. She said she watched nurses yell at patients, she was screamed at for leaving her room once. A nurse was feeding the patient she shared a room with, and got frustrated that the woman was not swallowing her food, so the nurse walked out. The woman began choking on that piece of food, and my mom had to go find someone to help get the food out of the woman's mouth. These were just snippets of what was going on here. My mom told me once "if I were ever that disabled, I'd rather die than come back here." Specifically referring to THIS facility's abuse and neglect. On multiple occasions Manatee Springs staff refused to call 911 when my mom was having breathing problems. She purchased a Life Alert because she was afraid they'd literally let her die there. On her last day there, she complained to staff several times over the course of two days that she couldn't breathe. The staff came in and checked her. They brought in other staff (I think a nurse or doctor) who said heWhat do you like most about living here? Answer: My mom stayed here and she was horrified by what she saw. Are there enough caregivers to handle the residents' needs, especially during emergencies? Answer: Yes Are the common areas pleasant and comfortable for socializing or relaxing? Answer: Yes How would you rate the quality and variety of the meals? (1-5) Answer: 3 Are special diets handled well? Answer: Yes Is the dining schedule flexible enough to meet your preferences? Answer: Yes How do you feel about the level of social interaction available with other residents? Answer: My mom didn't get any real social interaction at all. How was the units offered in this community? Answer: Shared Do you feel safe living in this community? Answer: No How well do you think the community handles emergencies or unexpected events? Answer: My review speaks volumes about what she told me. She had to purchase a Life Alert because the staff were not attentive to her medical needs. And she had to use it because staff wouldn't call 911 when she needed them to. Staff literally tried to stop her from being taken by paramedics. Are there any hidden fees or unexpected charges? Answer: No Would you recommend this community to others looking for senior living options? Answer: Never Is there anything you wish you knew before moving in? Answer: So many things!! So many horrible things... as stated in my review. The abuse, neglect, yelling at staff, allowing patients to die. Using an in-house PCP meant that the PCP could protect the hospital if anything went wrong.
