The community has completed 46 inspections, including 17 complaint-initiated, with a violation rate of 67.4%, slightly higher than Virginia’s average of 64.3%. A total of 146 deficiencies have also been recorded, notably above the state average of 32. During the most recent complaint investigation on October 14, 2025, findings included failure to report a major incident to the regional licensing office within the required 24-hour timeframe. Earlier reports have also cited recurring concerns related to medication management, service plan documentation, and incident reporting practices, including a confirmed case involving delayed reporting of a resident altercation that led to hospitalization. However, no fines or license suspensions are listed in available records.

Its scale and range of services also make it especially appealing for couples or families planning for changing care needs over time.
The Trillium Tysons is a luxury senior living community administered by Caroline Ottoviani in Tysons, Virginia, that offers independent living, assisted living, and memory care. Featuring a modern, urban setting, the community is distinguished by its LEED Silver certification, a sustainability credential that reflects thoughtful building design and environmental standards that are uncommon in senior living. With 100 licensed beds and a current occupancy of approximately 34%, this is a newer community that is still building its resident base, suggesting open availability for interested families.
While limited due to its relatively recent opening, the community’s inspection history shows compliance concerns. Across three total inspections, two resulted in violations, which is near the Virginia average of 64.3%. Deficiencies identified include record security, physician orders compliance, hazardous material storage, and resident privacy during medication administration. While the initial licensing inspection found zero deficiencies, subsequent visits have cited recurring administrative and safety issues. However, no fines, enforcement actions, or complaint investigations are currently on record.
Extensive amenities are also provided, including a state-of-the-art fitness center, a cozy library, a vibrant activity room, and rooftop terraces. Street-level plazas, garden courtyards, walkable green spaces, a full-service salon and spa, and six unique dining venues featuring chef-inspired, made-from-scratch cooking are among the on-site amenities. Wellness programs, enrichment activities, and a full calendar of social, educational, and recreational programming are also available. Building security includes 24-hour coverage and key fob access, and pets are also welcome.
With its luxury amenities, walkable surroundings, and a community in the heart of the Tysons area, The Trillium Tysons is ideal for older adults seeking a premium, urban senior living experience in Northern Virginia. However, families should inquire about corrective steps taken in response to recent inspection findings.
The Village at Woods Edge is a senior living community in Franklin, Virginia, offering assisted living, memory care, and short-term rehabilitation services. With a 67-bed capacity, the community currently operates at approximately 78% occupancy, which is in line with Virginia statewide averages, suggesting availability.
The inspection record reflects meaningful improvement over time, with six total inspections, three of which resulted in violations, which is below the Virginia average of 64.3%. The cumulative deficiency count stands at nine, well below the state average of 32. Notably, the most recent inspection, a renewal visit conducted on August 20, 2025, found zero deficiencies. Earlier inspections also cited issues including expired medications, unsecured medication storage, staff conduct related to resident abuse allegations, and documentation gaps.
Clinical services include licensed nurses and CNAs, rehabilitation services, respite care, and short-term rehab, making this community a practical option for both long-term residents and those transitioning from hospitalization or surgery. The community also features life enrichment programming, wellness services, and dining, including The Back Porch & Grille, a distinct on-site dining venue that adds character to the resident experience.
The Village at Woods Edge is a well-rounded option for older adults seeking assisted living, memory care, or short-term rehabilitation in a mid-sized community with an improving regulatory track record and a distinctive dining experience. The long active license term and the clean recent inspection also serve as credible benchmarks for families.
The Lodge at Old Trail is a full-continuum senior living community administered by Elizabeth Barber in Crozet, Virginia, offering independent living, assisted living, memory care, and respite care in a large, amenity-rich setting. With 166 licensed beds, the community is one of the larger facilities in the Virginia market, and its current occupancy of approximately 36% also indicates immediate availability for interested families.
Notably, the community has comprehensive amenities and services which include multiple dining venues such as Gregg’s Pub and Patio, the Corner Café, and the Ridges dining room with emphasis on local foods, a fitness center, library, outdoor spaces, concierge services, scheduled transportation, weekly housekeeping, and wellness programs. The most recent inspection on November 12, 2025, also cited medication administration deficiencies. However, no fines or enforcement actions are on record.
The Lodge at Old Trail is an ideal option for families focusing on a large, well-appointed community with multiple care levels and a range of lifestyle amenities in the Crozet, Virginia area. However, families should ask specifically about current medication management protocols and staff training compliance to ensure it is up to their standards.
The Legacy at North Augusta, Inc. is a senior living community in Staunton, Virginia, offering independent living, assisted living, memory care, and respite care, along with specialized services for hospice care and veterans assistance. With 135 licensed beds, it is a larger community that can serve older adults at different levels of need and is currently operating at approximately a 71% occupancy rate.
Across 17 total inspections, 14 resulted in violations, which is higher than the Virginia average of 64.3%. The cumulative deficiency count is also at 33, which is near the state average of 32. The most recent inspection on September 23, 2025, cited medication administration issues among other violations. Recurring themes also include medication administration errors, individualized service plan documentation, resident record security, and hazardous material storage. Complaint investigations were mostly unsubstantiated, with two substantiated complaints involving staffing levels on the secured memory care unit and building conditions. However, no immediate jeopardy findings, license suspensions, or fines were reported.
Clinical services include nursing services, licensed nurses and CNAs, 24-hour staffing, rehabilitation services, and respite care. Restaurant-style dining is provided, and the community’s programming spans lifestyle amenities, therapy services, and memory care support. The Veterans Assistance program is also a relevant differentiator for families with a military service background.
The Legacy at North Augusta is a great option for older adults and families seeking a larger community that offers full continuum care, veterans support, and diverse living options. However, families are encouraged to discuss the community’s medication management protocols and recent corrective actions directly with administration before making a placement decision, as regulatory records warrant close attention on such matters.

The latest review in October 2025 also addressed personnel background checks, medication administration, and resident care. Over time, several complaint investigations were substantiated, mostly involving resident care concerns and medication errors. However, no fines or license suspensions were reported.

Frequently Asked Questions about Independent Living in Virginia
What is independent living?
Independent living communities are residential settings for active older adults — typically with private apartments or cottages, shared amenities (dining, fitness, activities), and no built-in medical care.
How many independent living communities are listed on this page?
This page features 154 independent living communities in Virginia. Use the filters and comparison tools above to compare ratings, amenities, and pricing.
How do I choose the right independent living community in Virginia?
Start by matching the level of care offered to the resident's current and anticipated needs, then compare licensing status, staff-to-resident ratios, recent inspection results, and pricing. Tour at least two or three communities in Virginia, talk to current residents and families, and confirm what is included in the base rate versus billed as add-on services.
What should I look for when visiting independent living communities in Virginia?
Pay attention to staff interactions with residents, cleanliness and odor, food quality at meal times, the activity calendar, and how questions about pricing and care plans are answered. Ask to see the most recent state inspection report, the move-out / level-of-care-change policy, and a sample monthly bill that lists every fee.
