The Harmony Collection at Roanoke – Assisted Living

Overview of The Harmony Collection at Roanoke – Assisted Living

Now in its ninth year of operation, The Harmony Collection at Roanoke is an assisted living community on Pheasant Ridge Road in Roanoke, Virginia. The community is administered by Jenny Nicely, with additional corporate oversight from Robin Banch. The 105-bed community offers studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom layouts in a three-story building.

The facility’s occupancy rate is 73%, with 77 of the 105 beds filled. The neighborhood is somewhat walkable, with a Walk Score of 26. A car is the more practical way to reach most nearby shops and services, but a few may be within walking distance.

Daily life at the community includes chef-prepared meals, laundry service, and on-site fitness and recreation programming. Transportation services are also available for residents with appointments or outings. Pets are welcome in the community, so residents keep companion animals.

State inspection records for the community are mixed but are improving over time. Reviewers have most often flagged issues with medication administration, including documentation accuracy. There were also gaps in keeping resident service plans and assessments up to date after a change in condition. Families considering the community should ask staff directly how medication administration and care-plan updates are handled daily.

The Harmony Collection at Roanoke – Assisted Living Reviews

Stephanie
If your loved one does not need any assistance, this facility might be OK. If they need assistance with anything significant like medication, double and triple check that medication is being given at the correct time and correct frequency (and is getting refilled properly). Notice the staff turnover, this is a problem at Harmony. Communication with the family is also a challenge. Laundry takes a long time, if your loved on can't change the sheets, make sure it is getting done. Check the vent in the bedroom ceiling for dust buildup, stay for a meal and see how long it takes to arrive and if it is hot or not. Listen to the staff talk and listen out for the radio calls for "alarms" in rooms and how long it takes for someone to respond. Be involved, visit often, ask questions, don't assume they are doing what they say.

Rating Their Experiences

What do you like most about living here?

Common space at entrance is a welcoming location. They bring in people to sing/play music frequently. They like celebrating holidays.

Are there enough caregivers to handle the residents' needs, especially during emergencies?

No

Are the common areas pleasant and comfortable for socializing or relaxing?

Yes

How do you feel about the level of social interaction available with other residents?

If your loved one wants to interact they can, but they are not pushed to become involved. The activities could be less repetitive but the movie room and activity room are nice. Wish residents could access the "back patio" on their own as the seating is much nicer than outside the front door.

How was the units offered in this community?

Various options of rooms, monthly rent.

Do you feel safe living in this community?

Yes

How well do you think the community handles emergencies or unexpected events?

Unsure, but was told once they could not house more than 5 people that would need assistance to exit the building in an emergency.

How would you rate the quality and variety of the meals? (1-5)

2

Are special diets handled well?

No

Is the dining schedule flexible enough to meet your preferences?

Yes

Are there any hidden fees or unexpected charges?

Would you recommend this community to others looking for senior living options?

Only if they did not really need much assistance, just help with meals and housekeeping.

Is there anything you wish you knew before moving in?

How often the staff turns over, not reassuring. I wish I had done my due diligence looking at reports about the facility (inspections, complaints, etc).

K
This place has steadily declined in the last two years. Staff take a long time, too long, to come help when a parent has fallen or needs to go to the bathroom after they pull the cord. The dining hall takes forever to bring food that is cold and unappetizing. It used to be just ok in terms of service but in with new management, it has gotten atrocious. Noone is there from 2 years ago except for a few. Totally disappointed.
